STAND UP FOR
USF
SARASOTA MANATEE
TAKE ACTION TODAY
Let our legislators, Board of Governors and USF Board of Trustees know you are against this secret USFSM takeover TODAY
I am (student, parent, faculty, staff, donor, other) The proposal for New College of Florida to evict USF Sarasota Manatee students from its campus robs me and the community of access to a top tiered university with its 40 local accredited programs. Going to Tampa or St. Petersburg for classes means less hours at work, time and money to travel and the cost of living away from home. Negotiations have been done in secret without any input or warning to students, employees and faculty. Please oppose this bad deal for students, employers and taxpayers.

Community Rallies on April 24

Why USF Matters? On April 24, 2025, a gathering of former chancellors, legislators, faculty, alumni, and community leaders convened in opposition to the proposed involuntary merger of the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee (USF SM) with the New College of Florida (NCF). The meeting served as a platform for stakeholders to express their concerns, share personal testimonies, and mobilize community action. Some 140 attended. Key Themes and Discussion Points 1.Community and Economic Impact oSpeakers emphasized that USF SM is a critical educational and economic asset for Sarasota-Manatee. The campus provides accessible higher education for working adults, non-traditional students, and those unable to commute to Tampa or relocate. oSeveral employers noted that USF SM supports a vital talent pipeline, producing graduates in fields such as business, education, nursing, hospitality, social work, and cybersecurity—directly addressing local workforce needs. 2.Historical Significance and Mission oFormer legislators and board members highlighted USF SM’s community-driven mission established over 25 years ago, designed to cater to both traditional and returning students. oThe campus was described as a "legacy at risk," with millions invested in infrastructure and academic programs tailored to regional demands. 3.Academic Concerns oFaculty stressed that NCF lacks the accredited programs offered by USF SM, particularly in high-demand fields such as nursing, business, and education. The proposed merger would disrupt students' academic progress, forcing many to relocate or abandon their studies. oThe campus’ role within USF’s consolidated AAU-designated research university system was underscored as a unique value proposition that NCF cannot replicate. 4.Transparency and Governance Issues oA recurring grievance was the lack of transparency and community input regarding the merger decision. Many attendees were unaware of the proposal until recently, and concerns were raised about political motivations driving the process. 5.Personal Testimonies oNumerous speakers shared personal stories of how USF SM transformed their lives and careers, including graduates who advanced to law school, healthcare professions, and leadership roles in local businesses. oAlumni and donors expressed frustration that their financial and personal investments in USF SM could be undermined by the merger.

""Donors put funding into this building and it is going to be handed over to another institution? It's just unfathomable." John Clarke, former President SMR and Chair Campus Fundraising

"USF has invested millions in the campus and programs. The campus is working, it's growing. Handing it over to college that is in transition would be disruptive and costly."
Scott Perry, faculty and Vice Chair USF Faculty Senate
"After touring USFSM, I decided to complete my MBA here.It really anchored me here. I landed a really good job right out of that program and got involved in the community" Josh Baker, business leader and Chairman of USFSM Alumnae

Our USF SM students are in danger of being evicted from their campus!
Letter to the Community
April 2, 2025
We are current and former USF Sarasota Manatee Campus Board members, chancellors, community partners, and donors who have worked for decades to develop and expand our campus to match our vibrant region’s aspirations.
We come together to tell you USF Sarasota Manatee future is in jeopardy this legislative session. The proposed New College of Florida take over of our campus and sending our local students to USF Tampa, St. Petersburg or online is a bad deal which makes no sense. There has been no community consultation on the impacts. Why not?
Twenty five years ago, our legislative leaders, generous donors and the USF System committed to build a state of the art campus with high demand programs to match the region’s dynamism and ambitions. We delivered with 40 fully accredited campus based undergraduate and graduate programs built with employers and the community. The 3 campus USF system offers access to 200 degree programs and a vast research portfolio of this top rated AAU University. Why would we give up these advantages?
Ninety five percent of our 2000 students are local – compared to only 5% of NCF’s 700 undergraduates. We’ve attracted 250 faculty and staff with an annual $39 M budget. How could losing USF locally be a good deal for our students, employers and taxpayers? It isn’t.
The 2021 OneUSF consolidation created an efficient 3 campus system with local boards but shared services which cost the campus less than 3% of its annual budget. What new efficiencies are being proposed?
Our community understands that USF Sarasota Manatee is integral to our region’s economic future. That’s why for the 30th year 650 community members supported Brunch on the Bay, raising an impressive $400,000 for student scholarships. This adds to the 2500 scholarships raised for students in years past. Why would this deep community support be ignored?
School districts, hospitals, businesses, and non—profits benefit from the campus but the big winners are our students, families and employers. Affordable access to a top-rated university means more students stay in the region and become our valued employees. What better deal is being offered?
Let our legislators know you STAND UP for USF Sarasota Manatee and its importance to you as students and families, employers and community members.
